如英文概述While most design projects put the sceptre of decision-making in the hand of designers and engineers (also the boss, perhaps), Participatory Design (PD) makes an effort to share the power of design with other stakeholders, especially the end users. From this perspective, PD practices means to involve users in the co-design activities of products they use and also concentrates on how collaborative design processes can be driven by the participation of various people who will be affected by what gets to be designed. The term, co-design or participatory design, came into use by as a shorthand for “user participation in product development” by many design fields. PD, which is oriented from Scandinavian labor movement culture, cares more than collecting users’ needs for design purposes. It attempts to empower users as well as bring a structural change to the power dyanmics within the organization and make it more democratic. We can say that PD is not only a design process but also a social activist movement. Also, the PD practices shift the roles of users from an informant to a decision-maker and transfer designers to be design activity facilitators. For those reasons, the design process of PD differs from the traditional product design process that we are familiar with. This course will introduce the philosophy and theoretical backgrounds of PD and give students some ideas of PD from academic as well as practical viewpoints.
