課程概述 Course Description

Asbestos has been declared harmful to health, and its use restricted or banned in more than 52 countries. However, big countries such as China, India, Russia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Canada, Zimbabwe, and Colombia are still producers and consumers of asbestos. In addition, asbestos can be intentionally or unintentionally included in constructing materials, industrial products, and consumer products. Therefore, qualitative identification of asbestos from a variety of materials has become a globally regulation. So far, the most commonly used asbestos qualitative method is the central stop dispersion staining microscopy using a 10x objective lens. Although accredited by ISO (ISO-22262-1) and JIS (JIS-1481), this method cannot be applied to particle lengths < 0.1 mm. This course is designated to help the participators developing a comprehensive concepts on the principles of polarization microscopy with insightful understanding on central stop dispersion staining and phase contrast microscopy through lectures and practical operation. We will challenge to identify asbestos particles < 0.1 mm using a 40x objective lens. Additionally, we will compare the advantages and disadvantages of central stop dispersion staining and phase contrast techniques on asbestos qualitative analysis. Finally we will wrap up this course by addressing the possibility of quantifying asbestos by a variety of techniques.
