Course Description

This both practical and theoretical course has two objectives. First, it aims to introduce the students to the archaeological methodology, the practice, and the management of an archaeological site in Europe, and more precisely in continental Greece (Region of Southern Thessaly, near the city of Farsala). Secondly, it aims to familiarize the students to Mediterranean Prehistory through a direct involvement into a fieldwork project which consists in excavating a Middle-Neolithic site (called Koutroulou Magoula, dated from 5800-5300 BC) and some Bronze-Age re-occupations. This fieldwork experience and the acquisition of knowledge related to it will be consolidated through the visits of archaeological sites and Museums around Greece. The visits, co-organised with Greek archaeologists and Cultural Heritage Managers, will cover the periods from the Palaeolithic, the Neolithic, to the Bronze-Age, up to the Archaic, Classic, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The students will be expected to acquire both an archaeological fieldwork experience, and a general understanding of the Southern Mediterranean prehistory and antiquity.
