課程概述 Course Description
This course is intended for second year graduate students to help them develop their scientific reasoning skills in conjunction with basic skills of scientific communication in an English academic environment. Research material used in the course will be selected by the students and relevant to their individual research projects. In the first part of the course students will select a published research article and explain the principal biomedical processes being reported on. Students will write brief mini-reports highlighting the significance of the findings and the interpretations of those findings (not just summarizing results). The critical thinking skills refined in the first part of this course are elaborated on in the second part of the course where students will generate a progress report of their current research projects with a focus on a detailed literature review for the introduction as well as their findings. Detailed feedback on students’ writing assignments and oral presentations is provided throughout the course so students can actively improve their writing and oral skills. The final student-generated products help the students with their graduate studies. The introduction of the Progress Report can be a basis for the introduction of each student’s thesis. In addition the analysis of their project will aid students in directing what future experiments must be done to expedite their completion of the graduate program. At the end of the course, students will have generated an analytical progress report and given a presentation of their research project in lieu of their final exam. Document: Analytical Progress Report, (including literature review, abstract, Materials and Methods, current findings, required future experiments)This course is intended for second year graduate students to help them develop their scientific reasoning skills in conjunction with basic skills of scientific communication in an English academic environment.
