Course Description

This course introduces student to the fields of archaeobotany through the study of its various sub-disciplines. Plant plays a major role in human technology and diet, but direct evidence of plant-remains is scarce in archaeological tropical context. The course explores the possibilities offered by archaeobotany subdisciplines to answer the following research questions: which are the disciplines of economic botany and archaobotany that can provide with information about past plant use? Are present-day plant properties useful to improve our understanding of past plant technology?

Course Objectives

  • learn the basics of botany disciplines, ethnobotany and archaeobotany.
