課程概述 Course Description

課堂內容綜覽晚期的新石器時期到初期歷史時期的東南亞考古學。本堂課將會對晚期新石器時期、青銅器石器、金屬器/鐵器時期和初期歷史時期進行詳細介紹,也會討論年代學問題。通過檢視這些考古遺址和考古遺留,(包括物質文化、人類和動物遺留和植物遺留),此堂課程會介紹各種主題,像是聚落規模、喪葬習俗、都市化的開始、學徒制的組織,以及他地和東南亞遠距離的接觸。 此課堂讓學生能夠獲得各種考古遺址、不同時期關於東南亞考古的知識。課堂包含教師講授,以學生PPT呈現口頭報告,討論以科學為基礎的文獻。每週學生都會提問和閱讀文獻,並做出評論,可增進科學推理和思考、寫作技能。在此學期當中,會邀請學生研究自己選擇的東南亞考古相關的主題,最後在課堂上介紹(口頭報告),以及撰寫書面報告(最終書面報告)。
The course offers an overview of Southeast Asia archaeology from the late Neolithic to the beginning of the historical period. It will successively provide details on the late Neolithic period, the Bronze Age, the Metal/Iron Age and finally the beginning of the historical period, while also discussing chronological issues. Through the examination of archaeological sites and archaeological remains (including material culture, human and animal remains, plant remains, etc.), the course will examine various topics, such as jars burials and funerary practices, settlement patterns, the beginnings of urbanization in Southeast Asia, as well as trade and long-distance cultural contacts. A special emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of archaeological evidence to understand past people's interactions and circulations. The course will also explore major hypotheses and current research issues debated in Southeast Asia, which may feed students with inspiring research questions. Finally, various case studies will be discussed throughout the course to underline how combining different analytical approaches may contribute to an in-depth understanding of the past. The course will include formal lectures by teacher and oral presentations by students. Discussions and questions during the class will be strongly encouraged. Every week, students will be asked to read and comment selected academic publications to further explore scientific reasoning and to increase skills in writing and thinking. During the semester, students will be invited to elaborate a research topic of their choice in relation to Southeast Asian archaeology, to introduce their topic to the class (oral presentation), and finally to write a report (final written examination).
