天主教法典淵遠流長,雖然正式之法典於1918年5月19日始告正式完成並生效,嗣又於1963年3月28日開啟長達20年之修訂工作,直到1983年1月25日始完成總共1752條,包括:總則、天主子民、教會訓導職、教會聖化職、教會財產、教會內的制裁與訴訟程序之「新天主教法典」。其實,實質的天主教法典(彙編),早自西元第5世紀初,即已經存在,而較正式之編纂工作,則始於12世紀中葉的「格拉濟亞法令」,模仿優士丁尼大帝(Iustinianus)之「民法大全」(Corpus Juris),其成書早於拿破崙法典約660年,早於德國民法典750年,其體系與立法之思想,洵值得研習世俗法律之學者參考。The Catholic Code (CODEX JURIS CANONICI) has a long history. Although the official Code was officially completed and entered into force on May 19, 1918, and its amendment work was opened on March 28, 1963 for up to 20 years until January 25, 1983. A total of 1752 articles were completed, including: General Rules, God's People, Church Discipline, Church Sanctuary, Church Property, Sanctions and Proceedings in the Church. In fact, the substantive Catholic Code (compilation) has existed since the beginning of the 5th century, and the more formal compilation work began in the middle of the 12th century with the "Grazia Decree", which imitated the Emperor Iustinianus's "Corpus Juris", which was written about 660 years before the Napoleonic Code (Code Napoleon Bonaparte), was earlier than the 750th year of the German Civil Code (BGB). Its system and legislative ideas are worthy of reference for scholars who study the secular law.
