課程概述 Course Description

本課程研讀探討1900~1940年代現代美國小說
This course provides an introduction to the major American novelists of the modernist period, roughly 1900 through the 1930s or 1940s. While the emphasis in the course is generally on modernist social, psychological, or aesthetic values common to the poetry, art, and music as well as the fiction of the period, writers are also dealt with who don’t reflect these values, who are indifferent to the formal experimentation characteristic of the age. Writers previously dealt with in the course include Theodore Dreiser, Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis, Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Nathaniel West, and John Steinbeck. In the present version of the course, works have been chosen that reflect American interest in or nostalgia for its pastoral agricultural or wilderness roots.
