課程概述 Course Description

This is a graduate seminar designed in particular for literature majors. Reading the novels by firmly canonized British writers of the 19th-century, we will approach these texts from aesthetic, historical, social and psychological--to name just a few--perspectives. We will examine some of the existing criticism in order to discover and critique its presuppositions and adequacy. We will look at these fictional works not in isolation, but as both a reflection of 19th-century values, and as a means of creating, upholding and/or questioning these values.
