Course descriptions:     Through invited lectures, students’ presentations on selected journal articles, and in-class discussion, this course aims to provide students with a platform where the dialogue of knowledge, concept, health policy research, community health, epidemiology, and biostatistics can be communicated. Meanwhile, students are expected to enhance their capabilities of communication and skills of oral presentation by integrating various courses into this seminar.

Teaching objectives:     Through the process of presentation and discussion, this seminar course aims to help students increase the knowledge and skills of conducting public health research, and in turn, to help students become public health professionals with both capability of conducting research independently and a caring mind for the people and the society as a whole.

Course requirements:

All PhD students except those who had completed the qualification tests (i.e., PhD candidates) must attend the bi-weekly seminar or scheduled lectures by invited speakers. Those who are unable to be present at class should submit their leave application to his/her theses supervisors or the Departmental Director (for those who have not yet registered with a thesis supervisor). No more than 2 leaves will be allowed and waived for the entire semester. PhD candidates should attend the invited lectures and are encouraged to be present for the seminars with topics of their interest.

Seminar reports, commentary, and responses to commentary should be uploaded to “moodle” on time. Delay reporting will be taken into account in course evaluation.
Course contents: In addition to invited lectures, the course contents also include seminar reports, commentary on seminar reports, and responses to the commentary. Details are illustrated below:  
A. Seminar reports: 
1. For the 1st and 2nd year PhD students:

Please select two journal articles that are related to your research interest, and present them by a side-by-side comparison approach. The two selected articles must be inter-correlated with respect to the research topics or must be a series of continuing studies with the same or inter-correlated research question(s). The presenters should first report the current gap in knowledge concerning the research topic. Then to compare the studies with respect to their arguments, viewpoints, as well as the similarities and differences in methodology and conclusions. Also, please delivery your comments on the advantage and disadvantage of the two presenting papers, and on why the presenting articles can be accepted and published in specific journals.
2. For the 3rd year or higher grades students: 

For those who have not yet passed the qualification tests, there are two options: 1) Making progress reports of his/her doctoral research; 2) Reporting findings from literature review. The PhD students from this category may be exempt from presentation after getting approval from his/her thesis supervisor.
3. Key points of presentation:

The key points of presenting articles included: What is the research question? Are the methods (including statistical analysis employed) appropriate? What are the results? What are your comments on the papers and what lessons you learned from the studies. Also, please comments on the reasons why the papers were published.

For each presentation, a total of 20 minutes are allowed; and another 20~25 minutes for discussion. Presenters should self-examine the time needed to complete the presentation, and make adjustment whenever necessary. Please be on time to avoid delaying the course agenda.  
4. Language of presentation:

To make the presentation understandable to international students, and to increase the proficiency in speaking English for local students, all PhD students should make their presentations in English. However, both Mandarin and English can be used in after-presentation discussion to facilitate the seminar. Please also note that all slides presented must be shown in English as well. The size of fonts in the presenting slides should not be too small, and should be clearly eye-catching.
5. Time of uploading your files:

All presenters must upload the articles to be presented to “moodle” 14 days before presentation, namely, on mid-night (24:00) of Monday 2 weeks prior to the date of presentation. Those who will present literature review or make progress reports may skip this step. The slides (PPT) to be presented must be uploaded to “moodle” one week before presentation (i.e., before 24:00 of Monday, a week before).
B. Commentary:
 Commentary included oral comments and written comments:

Oral comments: The scheduled oral comments must be done in class immediately after the seminar reports. Those who are scheduled to make commentary should read and review the materials of seminar reports and slides in advance. Contents of the commentary should also be presented with slides (PPT), which must be uploaded to “moodle” at mid-night of Friday in the previous week. Again, slides for oral comments must be made in English.

Written comments: The forms for the written comments will be distributed in class, and the written comments must be completed by the end of class. All students attending the class should report their own written comments on the seminar reports, presenting PPT, and stage manner of presenters. The written comments must be constructive and should hand them over to the presenters at the end of class. Both Mandarin and English are allowed for written comments.   
C. Reponses to commentary：
All presenters must respond to the commentary.

There are three sources of commentary. a). Comments from the oral commentator in the class, b). Written comments from other students in the class, and c). Comments raised by attending faculty and students in the class. Presenters should make comprehensive responses to the above comments.

Responses to the commentary should include a). Outline or tabulate the comments, and b). Making point-to-point responses to each comment no matter you agree or not agree with the comments raised.

Responses to commentary must be uploaded to “moodle” by mid-night of Monday two weeks after presentation. It is also the responsibility of each presenter to hand hard over the copies of his/her responses to commentary (along with other students’ written comments) to Miss Yu, Pei-Hung.
D. Requirements 

Given a diversity of public health related issues, all participating faculty and PhD students are encouraged to learn from others with an open mind. The commentary should be constructive, the responses to the comments must be humble and with an open-minded manner.

It is the common responsibility for both presenting students and their thesis supervisors to work together on both seminar reports and review of the comments from others.

Please turn your cell phones into silence, and be reminded not to use cell phone inside the class. You may be allowed to answer the phone calls outside the class if it is necessary to do so.
Evaluation :

Seminar reports:             40% (Scored by all faculty)

Oral commentary:          10% (Scored by all faculty)

Responses to comments:        20% (Scored by the faculty in charge of the course)

Class participations:       30% (Scored by the faculty in charge of the course; 20% for attendance rate and written comments completed; and the other 10% goes to in-class participation in discussion)

 

 

 

課程概述：藉由來賓專題演講、學生期刊論文報告與課室討論，本課程將提供學生在衛生政策、社區衛生、流行病學及生物統計等學科之相關知識、觀念、研究對話與交流的一個平臺。同時，透過專題討論之訓練並融合各課程之教學，加強學生之溝通協調與口條表達之能力。

教學目標：透過專題討論過程使學生廣泛接觸公共衛生基本知識、技能，以培養出具備專業知識、獨立思考能力、關懷社會與族群健康之公共衛生人才。

課程要求：

除了已經通過資格考試的博士班學生外，全體修課學生皆應出席隔週的專題報告、以及專家學者演講，未能出席者必須向所長（尚未有論文指導教授者）或論文指導教授請假，一學期請假在2次以內者仍視為全勤。已通過資格考試者應出席專家學者演講，其餘週別可選擇有興趣的議題參加。

專題報告、專題報告評論、以及針對評論所作的回應檔案皆應依規定時間上傳moodle，遲交將列入課堂參與之評分考量。
課程內容：專題討論之課程內容，除了專家學者演講外，尚包括專題報告、專題評論及評論回應。說明如下：
一、專題報告：博士班各年級各有訓練，規劃如下：

博一、博二學生：

請挑選與自己論文相關之期刊論文2篇，進行文獻報告與比較分析。這兩篇文獻必須有相關性，可能是延續性研究，或是類似研究但不同方法或對象，以便進行比較。報告時，請先對研究背景與知識缺口進行闡述，進而針對研究爭議進行分析與比較，描述研究者的不同論點、方法、結論的異同等，並加上報告者對這2篇文獻的評論，如優缺點、為何能被刊登等。

博三或以上學生：

依所上決議，尚未通過資格考筆試的學生，每學期需在專討做進度報告，報告內容（1）可依照研究方向做進度報告；或（2）進行文獻回顧。上述報告不會安排同學評論。若有特殊因素未能報告，須經指導教授同意。

專題報告之重點：

重點包括：研究問題為何? 研究方法（包括統計方法）適當嗎? 研究發現為何? 您對研究結果與結論的評論為何? 您從論文中學到甚麼新的東西或體會? 同時也提出您的看法，說明為何該論文為何會得到期刊的青睞而獲得刊登?

專題報告時間為20分鐘，另外有20-25分鐘的討論時間。報告學生須事先檢視自己的報告時間，調整報告內容，嚴格遵守報告時間。

專題報告使用的語言

為了讓外國籍博士班學生能夠了解報告內容，也同時為增進本所博士班學生的英文說的能力，本課程要求博士班學生以英文進行專題報告，惟報告後之討論可以以英文與（或）中文為之以掌握專討進行的流暢。也提醒注意的是，專題報告所使用的投影片內容須以英文撰寫、呈現，且字體不宜太小，必須清楚、醒目。

檔案上傳時程：

報告者須於報告日期前14日（前兩週的星期一）晚上24：00以前，將所要報告的期刊論文文獻公告在moodle課程網站（進行文獻回顧或進度報告者可以不附參考文獻）。並於報告前7日（前一週的星期一）晚上24：00以前，將報告PPT檔案公告在moodle課程網站。
二、專題評論：
 專題評論包括口頭評論與紙本評論兩種：

口頭評論：指已排定的課堂評論，必須於專題報告後緊接著進行口頭評論。請評論者事先閱讀報告者指定的文獻及投影片，於課堂上進行口頭評論。請於評論前一週的星期五晚上24：00以前，將評論PPT公告在moodle課程網站。口頭評論的投影片內容必須以英文為之。

紙本評論：指課堂上發放之評論表。除了口頭評論者外，其餘同學皆須針對報告者的報告內容、PPT內容、及報告台風給予建設性的意見。紙本評論請於下課後交給報告者，以為回應之依據。每位課堂中的同學皆需繳交紙本評論表給報告者。紙本評論可以中文或英文為之。
三、評論回應：
報告者必須對評論做出回應。

評論來源有三方向：a) 排定的口頭評論人之評論、b) 同學們所寫的紙本評論、以及c) 課堂中出席同學及老師所提出的口頭評論。每位同學須針對這些問題做綜合的評論回應。

評論回應的內容應該要包括：a) 把上述三方向的評論意見一一列表整理出來。b)針對這些評論，把你的回應逐項寫出來。

評論回應需在報告後二週的星期一晚上24：00以前，公告在課程網站moodle。並將評論回應之報告及同學們的評論表影本交給余沛翃小姐，以為紀錄。
四、對參與者的要求：

由於公共衛生的領域相當寬廣，不論老師或學生皆需以開闊的心胸和態度來共同學習，以增長見聞。因此，評論者需提出建設性的意見，而報告者應以謙虛開放的態度來回應評論者的意見。

同學們在報告前不僅需要和指導老師討論報告的內容，報告之後也應與指導老師共同對老師同學的評論及討論內容再作檢討。

專討時間請將手機轉為靜音，並請勿在課堂內使用手機，如有重要電話，請到教室外面接聽。
評分標準：
1. 專題報告：                       40%（由全體教師評分）
2. 專題（口頭）評論：       10%（由全體教師評分）
3. 評論回應：                       20%（由負責教師評分）
4. 課堂參與：       30%（由負責教師評分，出席率及紙本評論之繳交占20%；課堂發言討論占10%）
