Course Description

The aim of this course is to introduce students to a wide-ranging of subjects in which archaeology has an impact and a responsibility outside of the academic world. It consists in exploring what ‘public archaeology’ could or should mean from different legal, political, economic, philosophical, ethical and social perspectives. Through the exploration of multiple cases-studies, the course deconstructs the expressions of what ‘public’ mean for archaeology, and how vital this notion can be for the social justification of its existence. It involves asking how the notion of ‘public archaeology’ has become marginalised through professionalization since the 1970s, but, as early as the 1990s, has been rehabilitated in the growing global movements of defence of the heritage common goods. During the semester, case-studies from all around the world will be used, notably to focus on notions of: ownership of the past, identity constructions, Nationalism, Aboriginal archaeology and community-based projects, and public perception and understanding of the past through museums, sites, and popular media. Finally, during the course, students will be strongly invited to debate on the differing values attached to archaeology and archaeological activities.
