This course will survey the range of American comedy and humor recorded in electronic media since 1920, focusing on film and television. We will explore different formats (silent film, animated cartoon, sketch comedy, stand-up) and different genres (romantic comedy, situation comedy, farce, satire) to consider how humor and comic forms expose anxieties and hopes about the possibilities for romance and friendship, community and democracy, liberty and happiness, in a society defined and divided by gender, race, class, and sexuality, in which performance can be both liberation and trap.
