課程概述 Course Description

The course aims to teach students the principles of technological analysis of ceramics. The approch was inspired by Andre Leroi-Gourhan's work and was developed in France by Valentine Roux and Marie-Agnes Courty (Courty & Roux 1995; Roux & Courty 1998; Roux 2011). It is based on ethnographic studies that have shown that ways of doing and techniques are socially inherited. Technological analysis focuses on techniques, ways of doing and tools used by the potters. The course will integrate lectures and practicals. Lectures aim at training students in the description and identification of ceramics' chaine operatoire (the term "chaine operatoire" refers to all the steps followed by the artisan(s) to make a pottery, from the selection and preparation of the raw materials to the final product (Balfet 1975; Cresswell 2010)), as well as to the classification of ceramic assemblages based on the chaine operatoire approach. Practicals involve applying the technological approach to archaeological assemblages and conducting various experiments to better understand the different steps involved in the pottery making process. Students will be asked to prepare key readings in order to be able to discuss and debate during the class. Students will also be asked to prepare a small project on pottery making (using experimental archaeology or archaeological pottery collections) during the semester. Projects will be evaluated at the end of the semester (oral and written examinations).

    1Class introduction. Introduction to technological analysis of pottery
    2The chaîne opératoire of pottery : what is it, why using it ?
    3Overview of other approaches used for the analysis of ceramics and discussion.
    4Describing the chaîne opératoire (session 1/2) : the purpose of this class is to look at each step of the pottery making process, in detail. Based on ethnographic and experimental examples, we will discuss what methods, techniques and tools can be used.
    5Describing the chaîne opératoire (session 2/2).
    6Practical training/experimental archaeology : pottery making (session 1/2).
    7Interpreting archaeological material (session 1/2)
    8This week, students will be asked to briefly introduce to the class a project of their choice for the final examination, to explain what issues they will tackle, what material they need and to discuss how their project will enhance their knowledge.
    9Interpreting archaeological material (session 2/2).
    10Recording pottery data: the purpose of this class is to teach students how to record technical data in their databases, to adapt databases to the various pottery fragments they are studying and to prioritize information. We will explore database models and forms.
    11Classifying pottery using the « chaîne opératoire approach » : while still observing and interpreting diagnostic traces, students will learn how to classify various pottery fragments using the « chaîne opératoire approach ».
    12Drawing archaeological pottery (session 1/2)
    13Classifying pottery shapes and sizes : the goal is to learn how to describe and classify pottery shapes and sizes using relevant and 'neutral' criteria. We will also tackle the link between forms and functions.
    14Practical training on archaeological material : the objective of this class is to allow students practicing more in order to gain autonomy.
    15Drawing archaeological pottery (session 2/2) and practical training in relation to students' projects (using experimental or archaeological materials)
    16Technological analysis of pottery : a case study.
    17Final exam: oral presentations and discussion. Students will be asked to present their project to the class and to submit a written report.
    18Revisions and questions.
