Course Description

Building on the “linguistic turn” that occurred in the 1960s, new materialism has announced the arrival of “the material turn”—an emerging trend of contemporary thought in the 21st century. It has already left its mark in such fields as philosophy, literary theory, cultural studies, eco-criticism, feminism, post-humanism, media studies, and the visual arts. Quentin Meillassoux, Rosi Braidotti, Manuel DeLanda, Karen Barad, Graham Harman and Levi Bryant are regarded as the most prominent new materialist scholars of today. These materialists open up the paradoxes inherent in humanist and transcendental traditions by creating concepts that traverse the fluxes of matter/mind, thing/life, body/soul, nature/ culture. For example, they strongly believe that the human mind (or even our language) is like a body, which already possesses highly materialistic attributes. Accordingly, this new theoretical approach has built up novel accounts of materiality, agency, reality, thing relationships and so on.
