課程概述 Course DescriptionThis is, emphatically, a survey course for MA students. We will read the novels by firmly canonized British writers of the 19th-century including Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, George Eliot, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. I aim for us to arrive at a preliminary understanding and appreciation of these established 19th-century novelists, and a hopeful sense of the intriguing, valuable research that remains for us to do. We will approach these authors from aesthetic, historical, social and psychological perspectives, investigating into some of the existing criticism in order to discover and critique its presuppositions and adequacy. We will look at these works as both a reflection of 19th-century values and a means of creating, upholding and/or questioning these values. In addition to the paper proposal and finished term paper, students will collaborate to prepare discussion forums for selected critical works on the novels studied in this course. Moreover, students will be required to make oral presentations (roughly 15-20 minutes) on assigned novels as well as to help lead the subsequent discussions in class. Finally, if time allows, students will briefly present the research findings of their term papers.
