課程概述 Course Description

美國少數族裔文學研究
As an introduction to contemporary ethnic American literature, this course usually focuses on writers of one or another of the following distinctive ethnic groups: African Americans, native Americans, Chinese or Japanese Americans. Works to be dealt with in the course are selected both for their inherent literary value or interest and for the light they shed on the experience of their particular ethnic group, including the struggles involved in trying to gain acceptance in American culture, conflicts between their traditional cultural heritage and the realities of contemporary American life to which they are trying to adapt, etc. In addition to class attendance and participation, requirements for this course include one short (4-page) mid-term paper, one longer (8-page) term paper, and one oral report on a critical article. Ph.D. students are expected to submit slightly longer (6- and 12-page) papers and to make two oral presentations. The editions of course texts indicated above have been ordered from Bookman Books and should be in the Cheng Da Bookstore by the beginning of the semester. The collection of critical articles to be used for reports will be supplied by the teacher.

The texts in this course have been produced since the late 1960s by writers from the United States who identify themselves as Native Americans. We will be consider how their cultural and political concerns reshape the received forms in which they work (memoir, history, novel, short story).
