課程概述 Course Description
This course has three foci: First, to develop each participant's skills in constructing her/his own ethical perspective in their decision making; Second, to introduce some of the important theoretical discourses and methodologies in ethics; And thirdly, to help develop a sensitivity towards current debates, including issues of economic justice, globalization, gender equality and environmental protection, and the creation of communities of justice and peace. We shall attempt to locate alternative models of social and community living to counter the values of hatred, alienation, and loss of meaning in life. The first six weeks will be devoted to the study of the theoretical discourse in ethics, while the latter part of the class devoted to the evaluation of the contemporary issues from an ethical perspective.課程學習目標 Course Objectives

1 | Introduction. Why study ethics? Brief analysis of the present context to identify the relevance of a discourse on ethics. |
2 | Understanding "Ethics", meaning of the term, differences between ethics and morality, origins of its thought and the history of its development. Different sources in doing Ethics. Relations of the branch of Ethics to other disciplines of study. |
3 | Introduction to various Ethical Methodologies; differences between normative ethics and meta-ethics. - deontological ethics. Kantian formation of "categorical Imperatives" could be one of the primary models that we take in this class. |
4 | Ethical Methodologies- 2. Introduction to teleological ethics, Theories of Utilitarianism, consequentialism and Utopia. We shall also discuss the notions of virtue, goodness and justice. |
5 | Contextual Ethics. The "Responsibility model" presented by Reinhold Niebuhr and Care Ethics offered by the Feminist thought. |
6 | Professional Ethics. |
7 | Understanding Globalization: history of the development of the concept of globalization. |
8 | Impact of globalization on human values. |
9 | Ethical evaluation on the impact of globalization. |
10 | Medical Ethics. |
11 | Bio-ethics. |
12 | Environmental ethics. |
13 | Ethical debates regarding Global warming and its impact. |
14 | Discussion on Environmental Ethics. We shall discuss the case of Tuvalu, a small island in the pacific as an example to evaluate the impact of global warming. |
15 | Gender Ethics. |
16 | War and Peace. |
17 | Concept of non-violence... (We shall see part of an the film, Gandhi) |
18 | Ethics of Emmanuel Levinas; Conclusion. |
