課程概述 Course Description

This course introduces the underlying principles of inferential statistics and some of its major applications in quantitative research, esp. quasi- experimental and experimental studies. As a first, and possibly the only, stats course for non-statistics majors, it has been designed with research application in mind. Emphases are thus placed on concepts building while computations are made minimal, thanks to advances in stats software. The course consists of two modules: the research design module and the stats module. The semester begins with a review of quantitative methodology and students’ hands-on experiencing being both a tester and a subject while coming up with raw data for initial analysis. They will then be required to design a study with all its critical elements identified before formally introduced to statistics. The ensuing statistics module covers topics from the logic of hypothesis testing up to its application in the various stats techniques such as t-test and ANOVA. Data management skills with Excel will also be introduced. The students are required to apply every technique they have learned to actual, preferably their own, data. Thus trained with stats techniques integrated with research designs, students are expected to have at the end of the semester clear procedural knowledge of conducting quantitative studies and reading knowledge of quantitative-based research articles.
