課程概述 Course Description

供需均衡分析、價格彈性、消費理論、生產與成本分析、市場分析、生產要素組合與所得分配、所得的測定、凱因斯總體經濟論、古典總體經濟理論、重貨幣派總體經濟理論、理性預期理論、國際貿易與國際金融、經濟成長與經濟制度。

課程學習目標 Course Objectives

This course is the first part of the two-semester sequential course -- Principles of Economics.  We will focus on the fundamental concepts of Microeconomics this semester, and then turn our attention to Macroeconomics in spring.
 
Microeconomics is broadly defined as the study of the choices that individuals and firms make, and the way these choices interact in markets.  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basics of microeconomic theory which economists use to model the features of economy, and prepare students for future study of economics at intermediate and advanced levels.
 
The course will be divided into five sections.  We will begin with the basic tools used in economics, such as demand, supply, market equilibrium, and elasticity.  We will then proceed to Section 2, which covers consumers’ behaviors and individual demands for goods.  In this section, we will see how economists capture consumers’ preferences from which to predict consumers’ choices.  In Section 3, we will turn our attention to the other side of market and analyze the behavior of firms and their supply decisions for goods.  We will discuss how a firm decides what technology it should adopt to produce its product and what quantity of this product it should bring to the market.  This logic will be then used to derive the supply curves of the firm and the market.  Section 4 will bring the two sides of the market together to show how the price and the output are determined by the market.  Given different assumptions, we will examine four types of market structures, which include perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly.  Lastly, we will close the semester with measure of efficiency and equity and apply this concept to the discussions of government actions and public choices.
