1. http://moodle.ncku.edu.tw/.  This is an online platform where you can access to ALL the courses you take in this academic year, the Freshman English course being only one of them. In the webpages for the course, you can find announcements about class activities, teaching materials (including PowerPoint files for the reading part and video clips for the listening part of the course), exercises (for vocabulary practice), etc.
2. http://english.ncku.edu.tw/.  This is the website you should check for details about self-study activities and resources, regulations, latest news, etc. If you have any related questions, check the website first. If you still cannot get the answers, ask clerks in the Eagle Project Office. Don’t bother me with administrational questions, which I usually have no answers to.

學習規範 Course Policy

Exercises :
1. This category involves my evaluation of all the speaking and writing performances you do in and outside class.
2. Students of the same group are given the same score for each assignment unless specified otherwise. Teammates should work together or take turn to complete the assignments.
Quizzes :
1. There will generally be one quiz given before each reading is discussed.
2. The quiz questions, usually of the Yes/No type, are about the content of each reading ; the purpose of the quiz is to make you read the short article before you come to class.
Self-study :
1. Your performance concerns your record of attending various kinds of English-learning activities outside the classroom, though the activities are still provided by the school.
2. Self-study activities include English Corner, Video Watching, On-line self-learning resources, speeches, Writing Consultancy, Contribution to the Eagle Project newspaper, etc. For detail, check the webpage : http ://english.ncku.edu.tw/eagle/?q=node/523
Vocabulary practice:
1. Each student has to finish a vocabulary exercise uploaded onto the course website; the exercise sheet must be printed out and the answer be handwritten. The completed exercise should be turned in next week.
2. Besides the answers to the questions, students should also check the dictionary and make a list of the keywords on the blank back, providing their phonetic symbols, parts of speech, Chinese definition, etc.
3. The key words learned in the practice will be tested in the two major written tests in the semester.
The General Proficiency Exam:
1. An exam taken, generally speaking, by every first-year student in the school. The test includes two parts: the first is about listening comprehension, and the second part is about vocabulary and grammar. For more detail, check the sample included in the course website.
2. The test requires you to check in the online English learning website, Live ABC (http://liveabc.lib.ncku.edu.tw/livegept2012/login/login.php) and do the exercises therein.
Midterm and Final Exams:
1. The two exams are given to evaluate your understanding of the textbook units. Besides questions about idioms and vocabulary, there will be others on meanings of the readings covered and translation and writing tests.
Listening and Speaking Exam:
1. Video and audio materials, some of which have been discussed in class, will be played during the exam for you to respond to questions.
2. The Test is only given once in a semester.

教學方法 Teaching Strategies

When students are divided into groups with three members in each, a group is expected to complete the following tasks:
For Reading & Writing:
1. In the beginning of a reading, each group should prepare to respond to the warm-up questions. All groups have to write down their responses, and three or four groups will be asked to go up and present their answers.
2. All the students have to take a quiz on an article to be discussed in class. The quiz asks only obvious questions about the article to make sure that the students read it before class.
3. When the article is discussed, each group has to translate and analyze a paragraph from the article; the teacher will also ask related questions to make sure that the group responsible for the paragraph is well-prepared.
4. The students are required to do some of the exercises at the end of each chapter ; each group may be asked to turn in the exercises it has done.
5. Each group has to do a paragraph composition when a chapter is finished.
For Listening & Speaking :
1. Students bascially follow the textbook for doing its listening and speaking exercises.
2. The students have to respond to the questions in the exercises, either individually or as a group. Group responses are solicited mostly when written ones are required. The written responses must be turned in for grading.
3. In response to the questions raised in each chapter, several groups have to present 2-to-3-minute talks. The groups preferably write down their presentations before they gave them as speeches.

備註 Remarks

The weekly course plan outline given above is only a tentative one.  It is subject to changes and adjustments according to the following factors.
1. As the listening and speaking (L&S) classes are done at the language lab EVERY OTHER WEEK, it is still not determined whether we will do the classes on the even-number or odd-number weeks.  The course plan is prepared under the assumption that the L&S classes will be on the odd-number weeks.  If the school sets our L&S classes on the even-number weeks, the class activities between the odd- and even-number weeks will be switched.
2. Since the readings in the textbook are pretty short, it is quite possible that we will move faster than the course plan indicates.  Hopefully we can finish three chapters, instead of two, at the end of the semester.

Content-based and task-based, this course is to achieve the following objectives:
1. Students should be able to understand the main ideas and organization of an article after reading it.
2. Students should be able to understand the correct meanings and usages of words from the AWL, especially words that involve multiple meanings.
3. Students should be able to write a coherently developed and organized paragraph.
4. Students should be able to comprehend a 20-minute video clip by watching and listening to it, partially assisted by English subtitles.
5. Students should be able to respond to a question with at least 3~5 statements.
6. Students are expected to develop awareness of the events of the larger world outside Taiwan, of the times before the modern age.
