Language Proficiency and Communication Abilities
課程概述 Course Description訓練使用一般英文學術性字彙，以增進學生英文口語表達及批判思考能力。
課程學習目標 Course ObjectivesThe primary goal of the course is to first cultivate student’s four skills of English proficiency, as well as improve pronunciation and building vocabulary. Particular strong emphasis is placed on listening and speaking.
Second, the course aims to encourage students to think and express their own opinions and ideas on a wide variety of stimulating topics discussed in class. Therefore, the course makes extensive use of role plays; and pair, group, and whole class activities . Throughout these interesting and enjoyable activities, students can be taught and learn the strategy of asking-answering questions, critical thinking and presentation. After discussion, students need to take turns to make comments or presentations on the topics. These give students not only a chance for individual practice but also interaction with others in the classroom. Especially, students work in pairs or in groups, they will have to learn how to cooperate to complete tasks and learn from one another.
In addition, there will be other in-class assignments ( for example, identify and outline the main ideas of essay, summarize an article, write down the key words or main idea after listening the text and so on ).
At the end of the semester, each student of the course has to make one about 3- 5-minute presentation in their areas of interests and experiences. An assigned magazine (CNN Interactive English Magazine) will be used as supplementary materials and students have to read them on their own. Finally some related supplementary teaching materials will be added in to fulfill more effectiveness of this course.
On completing this course , students are expected supposed to be able to:
1. overcome fear of speaking in English
2. have the oral communicative competence. that is, the ability to communicate in English. (Q&A skills)
3. make use of their own knowledge and experiences to share ideas and opinions. ( Critical thinking skills)
4. know how to make a short presentation or delivery oral comments on the topics. ( Presentation skills )
5. improve reading and writing skills, too
