INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

儀器分析與分析化學 This class was originally 2-credit hr (autumn semester, ChE) lecture course of “Instrumental Analysis” 儀器分析. Starting from Fall semester of 2014, this course is extended into 3hr per week, with extended coverage of instrumental analysis and chemical analysis. This course will provide ChE undergraduate students (Ch.E. junior year) a basic training on the principles of analysis of chemical structures and compositions determination/analyses through the use of various modern state-of-art instruments. In each of the Sections (II. III, IV, V), there are 4 ~10 different types of instruments. The modern numerous types of available analytical tools are increasingly complex. Due to time limit (2-credit hr), it is not feasible to cover all important instrumental techniques, methods, principles in the courses.
Focuses of the class lectures will more emphasize to cover the instruments that will be conducted in the laboratory course in following semester (autumn). Additional subjects on instrumental analyses, other than those available in the laboratory, will also be covered as much as possible in the lectures if time permits. Analy Chem + Instrumental Analysis: The main subjects of Instrumental Analyses, according to the textbook, are divided into five main sections: Chemical Analysis – an Introduction Chapter 1. What is Analytical Chemistry? Chap. 7. Principles of Neutralization Titrations: Determining Acids, Bases, and the pH of Buffer Solutions. Chapter 9. Applying Neutralization Titrations Instrumental Analysis(The topisc to be covered) Section I: Introduction to Instrumental Analysis -not covered Sections to be covered in lectures: Section II: Atomic Spectroscopy: Atomic spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy Section III: Molecular Spectroscopy; IR, UV-Vis, Surface analysis:Scanning Electron Microscopy Section IV: Separation Methods: GC, LC, GPC Section V: Misc. Methods: Thermal Analyses.
