ECONOMICS & LIFE

Economics studies how to allocate limited resources among agents with unlimited wants with the aim of realizing the potential social welfare or reaching the economic efficiency. The comparative advantage principle has demonstrated that traders can mutually benefit from specialization and exchange of goods. Yet, it is the market where these transactions are made and potential gains could be realized. In modern markets that rise from sophisticated specialization, general consumers are the buyers of most final products while the firms act as their primary suppliers. We first evaluate how the utility-maximizing buyers determine their optimal choices along the varying market price and how this law of demand would be influenced by changes in relevant market factors. On the other hand, the introduction of the law of supply leads us to the understanding of the firm’s optimal selling decision in response to the variation in market price and relevant factors. With the market equilibrium model, we further investigate how the market price, the invisible hand, can allocate resources efficiently so that most potential gains of trade can be realized while both sides of participating agents only pursue their self-interests. At last, we will extend our discussion to the scenarios of market failures where imperfect competition, such as monopoly or oligopoly, or externality causes loss in social welfare and to their remedies by the introduction of government interventions.
