INTERDISCIPLINARY PRINCIPLES IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

There is growing recognition of the need to implement sustainable development strategies, and that past and present strategies of industrial societies have led to unacceptable social inequalities and damage of the physical environment. This need is being reflected in government policy, business strategy, grassroots work, and technical innovation, but true sustainability has been difficult to attain as it requires that issues of economic progress, ecological protection and social justice all be met. Meeting such goals demands synergy and collaboration across disciplines and stakeholder groups. Universities play an important role in reaching these goals. Problem-Based Learning (PBL), interdisciplinary education, civic engagement and social responsibility are critical aspects of preparing the next generation to be able to adapt sustainable development approaches. This course will allow students to explore current global trends in sustainable development, gain experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration and co-creation, and work on current issues of sustainability in Tainan through lectures, forum discussions and workshops including international and interdisciplinary perspectives.
