HUMANS, ANIMALS AND ETHICS

This course examines the ethical relations between humans and animals by drawing upon the disciplines of History and Ethics. The first half of the course offers a historical survey of the ways that people have interacted with nonhuman animals, for example: hunting, domestication of livestock, keeping of pets, use of animals in science, etc., and considers the ethical implications of these interactions on past and present human-animal relationships. The second half of the course familiarizes students with major moral arguments and positions given in defence of animal use and animal protection. It encourages students to develop their own views on ethical problems concerning animals in contemporary society and devising potential solutions and possible lines of action to these challenges.
