LANGUAGE, POWER, AND IDENTITY POLITICS

This class takes it that identities are constructed, in particular, through languages. It is always a process of becoming rather than being. This class attempts to address how ethnicities, gender, and class are constructed through languages and the power mechanisms that are involved in this process of construction. The class attempts to offer theoretical frameworks on how to think about the politics of language, and then, use cases from Taiwan and other parts of the world to examine the relationships between identities and languages.
